The ¯uorescence of pyrenyl labelled polystyrene has been investigated. The ratio of excimer to monomer intensities (I e /I m ) is found to vary tortuously with increasing concentration (C) and displays two critical concentration points, C at about 3.2 Â 10 À2 g ml À1 and C m at about 0.32 g ml À1 .

✦ Synopsis
Excimer formation of pyrenyl labels attached to polystyrene has been studied in concentrated solution and solvent-plasticized ®lm. The ratio of excimer to monomer intensities (I e / I m ) is found to vary tortuously with increasing concentration (C) and display a critical concentration point at C g % 0.80 g ml À1 . While C `Cg , the sharp decrease of I e /I m is ascribed to entanglements of polymer chains. In the region C b C g , I e /I m increases slowly because of static excimer formation.
