✦ Synopsis
An ion-exchange chromatographic procedure for the isolation of octopine from the mantle muscle of Sepia officinalis L. is described. The method is simple and reproducible, and the average yield is about 4.5 g of highly purified compound/kg of tissue. Some properties of octopine isolated from Sepia muscle are compared with those of two synthetic octopines of different origin. The partial inhibition of octopine dehydrogenase, the enzyme of octopine metabolism, in the presence of both synthetic samples confirms the importance of using natural octopine for accurate enzymatic studies.
