## ONE FIQURE A number of strains of T e t r a h y m e m geleii have been cultivated in media free from bacteria. The effect of pH of the medium upon the growth of T . geleii E has been studied by Elliott ( ' 3 3 ) . Loefer ('35, '38, '42) has studied the effect of p H upon growth of several other

β¦ Synopsis
The iriiportaiit discoveries of Cook and his associates ( '32) on the production of malignant tumors in laboratory animals by certain hydrocarbons opened a new and important field or' investigation in cancer research. Although much of the resultant work clealt with the effects of these hydrocarbons on tumor production in mammals, it seemed conceivable that if such compounds would also affect the cellular activities of iiiicroorganisms, these organisms might then serve a s useful tools in the study of caiicer induction, and perhaps yield'some iiiformation on the mechanism of carciiiogenesis in general.
From the studies on mammalian tumor induction it would appear that the effect of carcinogens is primarily a mutagenic one. Induced mutations have been reported in the case of many microorganisms. It would thus be possible that an investigation of the mutagenic effect of carcinogens on microorganisms might be of value in this respect.
On the other hand, a number of studies have been published from which it appears that, whether through mutations or otherwise, the known carcinogens may exert a specific effect on the growth of microbial populations which can be readily detected. However, a survey of this phase of the literature 'Fellow of the American Caneer Society on the recommendation of the Committee on Growth of the National Research Council. ## Abstract Tolbutamide partially inhibited the growth but increased the glycogen content of __Tetrahymena pyriformis__ in logarithmically growing cultures. Tolbutamide slightly increased ^14^CO^2^ production from [1β^14^C] and [6β^14^HC] glucose and [2β^14^C] pyruvate, but had little effect on the
## Abstract When cycloheximide (0.2 ΞΌg per ml) was added to synchronized cultures of __Tetrahymena pyriformis__ GLβC, the initial rate of incorporation of ^14^Cβleucine was reduced to about 20% of the rate observed in control cells. After one hour, the rate increased fairly abruptly to about 60% of
Tetrahymena thermophila (T. thermophila) BF 5 produces heat through growth and metabolism. By microcalorimetry, the power-time curves of the metabolism of T. thermophila BF 5 at 28 Β°C were measured and some quantitative parameters were obtained from these curves. Then the action of berberine on this
