✦ Synopsis

Random roll responses measured during the sea trials of two Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue vessels have been analysed using an innovative approach. This approach comprises the use of a combination of the random decrement technique, a neural network algorithm and mathematical modelling. Roll characteristics are found to vary randomly. Estimates of the mean values and the variances of the parameters were obtained and their variation with forward speed has been discussed.
