✦ Synopsis

Studies of the C=O suetchmg mode of acetone in fluid aqueous solutions suggest that water forms two hydrogen bonds to each oxygen atom. In marked contrast, acetone in frozen solutions is endathrated by water, there being no hydrogen bonds to the carboxy oxygen. Reasons for this contxast are discussed.
