✦ Synopsis

In this paper the size parameter D for the circular section or B for the rectangular section of the imaginary specimen for the imagina~ fracture point on the P-V curve of the small-scale specimen which does not satisfy the size requirement for measurement of effective plain strain fracture toughness vaiue K,, is determined by the method on the similarity methods and the concept of the equivalent energy. The concept of the equivalent energy is that the area under the psuedoelastic P-V curve is equal to the area under the actual P-V curve at a studied point. The value Kp obtained by the above-mentioned method is in better agreement with the experimental result than the value obtained by the similarity methods[3] and it is lower than the value obtained by the similarity methods [3]. This is more accurate for engineering applications. The method introduced in this paper includes the existing standard method[ 11. If the size condition is satisfied, the computational formula of this paper will be in accordance with the formula in existing standards [l].

In this paper the measurement of fracture toughness K1, by single cylindrical tensile specimen with ring-shaped crack is described. The specimen does not satisfy the size requirement for effective plane strain fracture toughness K,,. The principle assumed here is that the curve, normalizing the load
