An improved procedure for the synthesis of 6,&difluoro-&lactones from 5,5-difluoro-4-pentenoic acids is described. The method is illustrated for 2benzyl-5,5-difluoro-4-pentenoic acid (21, which upon treatment with first mercury(II)ace and then tri-n-butyltin hydride affords o-benzyl 6,6-difluoro-6lactone (5).
