✦ Synopsis

Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology, begins its eighth year of publication and we are pleased to provide our readers with the 1999 USPHS/IDSA guidelines for the prevention of opportunistic infections in persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus. These guidelines have been endorsed by the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). This information was originally presented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, August 20, 1999.

The journal has decided to publish these guidelines because of our commitment to women's health. Since Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynecology is a readily accessible resource for physicians providing care for women, publication of these guidelines should facilitate the physicians who care for women with HIV. This becomes more important because of the increase in HIV among heterosexual women.

We are fortunate to be able to present these guidelines to our readers. This is the first time that these guidelines are presented specifically to an audience focused on the care of women. We are certain that they will be a good resource for the practicing physician and welcome your comments regarding their usefulness to your practices.
