The behaviour of river waves is described using a simpli®ed dimensionless form of the momentum equation in conjunction with the continuity equation. Three dimensionless parameters were derived based on a quantitative linear analysis. These parameters, which depend on the Froude number of the steady

✦ Synopsis
An explicit method is presented for the analysis of guided wa¨es in a line defect channel in a two-dimensional photonic crystal. It can predict, e.g., the minimal channel width for allowing a wa¨e to propagate in the channel at a frequency in the stopband of the photonic crystal. The theoretical prediction is ¨alidated by numerical simulation using a finite-difference time-domain method.
