An expert system for the interpretation of infrared spectra EXPIRS was created. The main features of EXPIRS are: hierarchical organization of the characteristic groups, realized by frames; registration of the multiple use of spectral bands; taking into account the solvent absorption and the chemical

β¦ Synopsis
A knowledge base is proposed that adopts a set of rules that express the laws of spectra interpretation and the experience of special field experts in order to imitate the reasoning process of the human brain in relation to the group-frequency correlation of organophosphorus compounds. The knowledge base consists of band positions, intensities, and widths for organophosphorus compounds. Because the core of an expert system is knowledge, the key to expert systems is knowledge acquisition and knowledge expression. We sum up infrared absorption position-structure correlations of organophosphorus compounds on the base of a large number of special works, infrared spectra volumes, and our research work. The five-valence organophosphorus compounds in the knowledge base are divided into three groups. Our system employ logic-based expression. This kind of expression is very terse, not only reflecting the correlation between spectral characteristics and structure, but also realizing inferences and explanations. We apply semiautomatic techniques to obtain knowledge.
