โฆ Synopsis
Readers of BioEssays are now familiar with the thematic issues, of which we include one in each volume of six issues. The Cytoskeleton was the subject in the October 1987 issue, while Protein Engineering and Production is scheduled for February 1988. We are pleased by the reception that this type of issue has received.
A year ago, in making my annual report to the BioEssays family of editors, correspondents and the publishing staff, I proposed an extension of this practice in the form of an 'institutional' issue. In the same way as for a thematic issue, a team would be organized to assemble it, but in this case it would be one from a university or institution with a prestigious and ongoing record of contributions to fundamental biology. The institution in question would be the automatic subject of the 'Places' article, while something from its scientific history would be embodied in a ' Roots' piece. The reviews and other articles would, of course, reflect the research interests of the authors and, taken as a whole, the issue would represent what that team of commentators found to be most significant in modern-day biology.
