✦ Synopsis

A media access protocol to provide concurrent support for different real time and/or multimedia applications on an Ethernet LAN is proposed. The new protocol is specified and its performance is derived. The effect of the real time protocol on data users is evaluated and it is shown that while real time users obtain delay-constrained service, the total channel utilization is also improved when compared to a standard Ethernet network in which both data and real time users access the channel via the CSMA/CD protocol.
