β¦ Synopsis
Process could reduce costs for terephthalic acid
Lurgi, Eastman, and SK have developed a process for making terephthalic acid (PTA) which might achieve savings of $50/tonne. The mild oxidation leads to less byproducts. Other advantages include use of the heat of reaction, simple recovery of catalyst, and recycling of solvent. The process gives extremely low concentrations of p-toluic acid. A 500,000 tonne/y plant would cost $226 M rather than $280 M using traditional technology.
