U'hen single tablets containing 250 mg. of erythromycin base enclosed within an enteric cornpression coating were administered to fasting patients, a minimum therapeutic concentration of 4 mg. of erythromycin per 10 ml. of serum developed in about two hours. This therapeutic concentration was maintained for approximately nine hours.
Conclusions
- An enteric compression coating will protect erythromycin tablet cores from deactivation by gastric fluid.
This coating dissolves rapidly after passing through t h e pylorus and liberates the erythromycin from the tablet cores.
