This note describes an attempt to relate student numbers to required teaching staff. It was part of a programme of work prepared for the quinquennium 1972-7.

Leaving aside all time spent on college activities, university and departmental administration, and examinations, it was conjectured that for any department, the undergraduate teaching load of any year of study could be roughly described by the following expression:
