โœฆ Synopsis

Steyert and Stone I have recently published a technical note pointing out that the use of mesh copper screen would be of some interest in making heat exchangers. Such heat exchangers have also been developed in our laboratory over the last few years in order to obtain a small temperature difference between helium and copper and a low pressure drop. This brief note outlines the design and test performances of one of these counterflow helium heat exchangers inserted in the refrigeration system of the typical He II cryostat for laboratory magnets)

The construction is shown in Fig. 1. The gas circuit is made up of a space which contains the grid. The copper grid (electro-copper) is made of wire 0.14 mm in diameter and 0.35 mm apart in both x and y directions. It has been sintered in a hydrogen flow for one hour at 1293 K. Disks are cut out of the grid and staked together to a height of 28 mm.
