โฆ Synopsis
In previous electrochemical reports from our Laboratory 1' 2, 3 we have described the marked stabilizing effect of rt-heterocyclic amines on low oxidation states of molybdenum in acetonitrile. In order to develop a more extended picture of the effect of such amines on the redox behavior of Group VIb metals, studies similar to those for molybdenum were initiated for tungsten. It was believed that complexes of tungsten analogous to those investigated for molybdenum would provide an even more significant demonstration of the stabilization of low oxidation states by g-ligands in view of the greater stability of the higher oxidation states. The compounds utilized in this study were synthesized from tungsten(VI) chloride, a circumstance which provided accessibility only to KWC16, KzWC16, WC15bipy, WC15(py)2, WC14bipy, and WC14(py)2. Unfortunately, the electrochemistry of WC15bipy and WCls(py)2 is complicated by the fact that they are not simple molecular compounds in acetonitrile.
