✦ Synopsis

An elastic analys& is presented for walls supported by simple beams with or without an overhang. The wall is idealised into a set of equispaced vertical stringers, which carry direct load, with shear carrying panels between them. Any distribution of vertical superload can be considered and the effect of the wall self-weight may be included. A series of cases is analysed and the results are compared with those predicted by other methods.

Experimental work carried out at the Building Research Station is reported by Wood[l] who describes the form of "arching" action that occurs.

The paper presents an approximate method of analysis of deep walls acting compositely with supporting beams. The stresses in the wall are expressed as power series in the horizontal direction, the coefficients being functions of the height only. After satisfying the equilibrium and boundary conditio
