✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Montmorillonite K10‐supported ZnCl~2~ is an efficient and environmentally friendly catalyst. Knoevenagel condensation of malononitrile with aromatic aldehydes catalyzed by K10–ZnCl~2~ in anhydrous ethanol produces arylmethylenemalononitriles in 87–98% yield within 2–10 min under ultrasound irradiation. The catalyst can be reused two times without significant decrease in activity. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry
