โœฆ Synopsis

This paper presents a method for economic analysis of the use of manipulators with sensory units in an assembly line. The sensory unit includes a vision system which uses a laser beam for searching and accurately tracking any defective parts. Use of a universal gripper is proposed in order to eliminate gripper change time while maintaining the ability to accommodate any production change, hence reducing assembly cost. Manipulators with two arms and universal grippers are discussed. Models for mean production time and the assembly cost are developed for a robot with a universal gripper and sensory unit.
