✦ Synopsis

Techniques to store and handle large amounts of data are discussed, examples of large data bases are given. Contrary to most data collections geophysics in its broadest context deals with time-dependent data and their storage. These are, for instance, certain parameters, to be determined in regular intervals over long time periods, or descriptions of the time evolution of certain events. This leads to an increased rate of 1013 bit/a in certain fields already. We therefore request the establishment of national data archives. We also point to the new role of geophysics -in view of ozone destruction or climate changes -and its interchange with politics.
