✦ Synopsis

We should like to announce the availability of technical reports issued by the Space Physics Group of the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Minnesota summarizing energetic solar flare X-rays and possibly solar particle events beginning with September 1964 and extending to the present time. The atlas consists of plots of the ionization rate against time showing the profile of the events as observed in free space outside the magnetosphere. A discussion of the instrument and its response to X-rays and particles has been described in several publications, ARNOLDY et al. (1967( ), ARNOLDV et al. (1968a) ) and ARNOLDY et al. (1968b). A first volume of the solar flare X-ray atlas covering the period 5 September 1964 to 31 December 1966 and listing about 70 events is available as technical report CR-108 dated January 1968, School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Minnesota. A second volume covering calendar year 1967 is under preparation. These atlases describe the calibrations of the instruments so that the graphs of each X-ray burst may be interpreted quantitatively. Indication is given on the figures of solar radiobursts and short wave fade out events.

We are also considering the issuing of, and are preparing material for, a corresponding atlas giving the time profile in free space of solar proton events in the energy range > 12 MeV and in the flux level >0.01 protons cm-2 sec-1. We would consider completion of the proton atlas and its issuance as a technical report if sufficient interest develops.
