โฆ Synopsis
In order to evaluate fatigue lives without significant penalty, the analyses must assume a small initial crack. It has been reported in many studies, as noted in [1], that small cracks grow faster than large cracks at the same stress intensity factor range and that small cracks can grow at AK levels well below the threshold value for large cracks. Therefore, a fatigue crack growth analysis based solely on large crack growth data will invariably overpredict the fatigue life. The purpose of this work is to predict small crack growth rates for a typical pressure vessel steel, namely A533B, from the large crack growth information employing a semi-empirical crack growth model incorporaing crack closure effects.
