Synopsis
The density of states in the vicinity of the Fermi surface was deduced from published values of the paramagnetic susceptibility for gold-palladium alloys. Assuming a rigid two-b&rid model and making corrections for electron interaction, it was found that the predicted number of holes for palladium was 0.52 compared to e measured value of 0.55. The results were shown to be consistent with measured reaistivities if one assumes 8-8 and s-d scattering to occur aocording to Mott's simple theory. The predicted therms,1 component of the resistivity agrees very well with measured values. In certain cases of transition metals and alloys, comparatively simple models give a good qualitative account of the observed elect.rical behavior. lXott,(1,2) assuming fixed bands, has explained qualitatively t#he large electrical resistivity of the transition metals and their alloys. In his model, nickel and palladium are a~umed to have 0.6 and 0.55 electrons respectively in the s band, and an equal number of holes in the d band. On alloying these elements with noble metal atoms, the holes act as sinks for the outer s electrons of these atoms and hence the holes are filled in proportion to the alloy concentration. Such alloys show large positive deviations in resistivity from the Nordheim rule in the composition range where d band holes remain unfilled. This is explained by the high probability of +-d scattering, for the density of states at the Fermi surface is high in the d band.
