โฆ Synopsis
North West Water Ltd (NWW) is the regional water company in NW England, which serves an area from the Scottish border in the north to Cheshire in the south. It forms one of the divisions of United Utilities PLC, the UK's first multi-utility company.
NWW developed its first environmental strategy in 1997, committing the company and all its employees to working towards continuous improvement in future environmental performance and implementing an auditable environmental management system. The environmental strategy contained a requirement for a demonstrable commitment to the inclusion of the principles of the company's environmental policy in procurement.
An environmental procurement initiative is being co-ordinated by United Utilities' procurement specialists, to ensure that environmental considerations become a significant factor in purchasing policy and in the selection process for suppliers.
This paper describes how a small working group (which includes environmental specialists) has determined priorities for action and begun to make significant progress in this important policy area. Examples of achievements are cited which exemplify the approaches that have been developed and consideration is given to further elements that would reinforce the results achieved thus far in this procurement initiative.
