✦ Synopsis
The main goal of the study is to establish a relationship between monthly precipitation and discharge ®elds over the karstic Cetina river basin situated on the eastern Adriatic coast (Croatia). For that purpose a principal component analysis (PCA) of Cetina's time series (1961±1985) of monthly precipitation and discharge data was used. In addition, European sea-level pressure data were examined. The results indicate the existence of a high correlation between precipitation and discharge ®elds in the area considered, except for the hydrological stations closely below Peruc Âa lake where human in¯uence is signi®cant. Also, these ®elds are connected with the European sea-level pressure ®eld. Thus, a forecast of this ®eld can be used for estimation of the other two. Also, this relationship can be used for reduction of global climate model (GCM) scenarios to the regional scale.
