✦ Synopsis

It is well known that various oscillation modes exist in a coupled oscillator system. In this paper, a completely coupled system (symmetric system) of four similar van der Pol oscillators with third-order nonlinearity is considered. By means of the integral manifold theory, the oscillation mode is theoretically derived for which the invariant manifolds with their solution trajectories constrained (integral manifolds) are asymptotically stable. In order to find out how the theoretical results for the symmetric system vary when the symmetry is destroyed, a computer simulation and an experiment are carried out for the system with perturbed coupling coefficients or element values. The relationship of both is studied for each oscillation mode that is theoretically stable.
