✦ Synopsis

Concentration and temperature profiles arising in adiabatic fixed-bed adsorption of a single gaseous component are analyzed, with particular reference to the special case of a pure temperature wave preceding the mass transfer zone. A simple approximate criterion for its existence under practical conditions is presented which is met by many systems of industrial importance. It is further shown and verified by experiment that the solute breakthrough times will in this case be independent of the initial bed temperature. The results lead to the important conclusion that the usual cooling step following the thermal regeneration of a bed may be omitted in such systems without appreciably affecting the adsorber performance.
