β¦ Synopsis
Specimens of uniform thickness to be fixed by immersion or quick freezing for subsequent processing for electron microscopic examination are not always easily produced. In diagnostic electron microscopy in particular, material received from the operation room and immersed in a fixative is often too thick, resulting in less than optimal fixation of tissues deep in the specimen. To obtain slices of tissues of reproducible thickness, an adjustable tissue slicer was developed (Fig. ). The use of this very simple instrument can be learned in a few minutes by any technician not necessarily specialized in electron microscopy to produce slices from .25 to 2 mm in thickness and having a surface area of 10 mm x 3G mm.
