✦ Synopsis

The possibility of amplification 'is investigated both theoretically and experimentally when the anode is kept negative, so that the electrons in a thermionic valve cannot reach this anode, but approach it sufficiently near to induce considerable charges. The influence of the transit times is taken into accolmt. The agreement of theory and experiment is satisfactory.

1 ) Though in our case a negative potential is applied to the outer electrode, we want to retain the name ,,anode" for this electrode.

Possibility of amplification of electromagnetic radiation is theoretically studied in the scattering of a quasi-classical electron by an ion in the field of weak linearly polarized wave. Using the limiting process of the total cross-section at small values of adiabaticity parameter to Krainov's form
