✦ Synopsis
In the title compound, NH~4~
^+^·C~7~H~4~NO~4~
^−^, the cations and anions are situated on twofold rotation axes. The carboxyl and carboxylate groups are thus disordered; this is consistent with the short and strong O—H...O hydrogen bond across an inversion centre between these groups in neighbouring anions. Ion pairing, and intermolecular O—H...O and N—H...O hydrogen bonds contribute to the crystal packing stability.

The crystal structure of ammonium 2-mercaptopyridine-3carboxylate hydrate, NH 4 + ÁC 6 H 4 NO 2 S À ÁH 2 O, contains a zwitterionic anion with the pyridine-N atom protonated. All potential donor and acceptor atoms are involved in hydrogenbonding, resulting in a three-dimensional network structure.
the cations are stacked along the b axis to form a column-like structure. The anions, ethanol molecules and water molecules are linked via O-HÁ Á ÁO and O-HÁ Á ÁN hydrogen bonds to form a zigzag sheet-like structure. The cationic columns and anionic sheets are alternately arranged along the c axis.
