✦ Synopsis

Abstract

In this study, we experimentally demonstrated that the concentrations of ammonia (NH~3~) gas can be detected by a fiber sensor based on the poly‐aniline (PANI) sensing film coated on the surface of an etched superstructure fiber Bragg grating (SFBG). This sensing mechanism is based on the NH~3~ gas to interact with the PANI‐coating film to cause the film index change and then to result in the Bragg wavelength shift. The sensitivity of this sensor is around 0.073 pm/ppm, which requires to be improved in the future for achieving a simple, reliable, repeatable, and nondestructive chemical‐gas fiber sensor. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
