It is a secluded rheumatologist indeed who has not found himself explaining to patient, friend, or "media person" that there are more than 100 kinds of "arthritis." The figure is derived from an American Rheumatism Association ( ARAkapproved nomenclature and classification published in March 1964 (1) which, despite being labeled "tentative." has never been revised.
The Seventh Edition of the Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases, published in 1973 ( 2 ) . shows modifications of the classification, prepared by Editor GP Rodnan and carefully distinguished in italics. The McCarty text (1979) carries the original 1964 version (3); the Kelley et a1 text ( 1981) omits all mention of classificatory schemes (4). A very detailed scheme, originally prepared by a working committee of the German Society for Rheumatology. has been published by the European League Against Rheumatism as a manual with parallel German, French, and English texts ( 5 ) .
