✦ Synopsis
This book is a bibliography and is a magnificent product of American scholarship. It is the work of a Washington, D.C. mineralogist and his librarian wife. They searched through more than 50 previouslypublished geological bibliographies and from them accumulated 4000 items of geological interest published before 1850. They found that the 'Union List' included over 2000 periodicals published before 1850 and tracked down 750 of them including all the scientific periodicals and alI but those that ran to only a volume or two. They then searched through the 750 periodicals page-by-page and found a further 10000 geological items, including articles, reviews, reports, etc. There was nothing of geological interest in 225 of the periodicals. A search of catalogues in major research libraries, including the Library of Congress, gave a further 1000 items, mostly books and pamphlets. The 15 000 items obtained thus were then reduced to 11 133 by combining multiple editions, duplicate publications and some minor items less than nine lines in length. The result is an almost complete l i t of all geological items published in America before 1850 except for items in newspapers and reports of mining and railroad companies. T h i s list was fed into a computer for editing, indexing and printing. In the book, items are listed alphabetically under the authors' names and where anonymous in chronological order under journal titles. Some 2200 names are listed, of which about six are women.
