β¦ Synopsis
Effects upon Furnace Refractories of Protective
Gases for High Carbon Steels. By John 11. Lam, Salem Engineering Co.-Protective ntinosphere gns for high cnrbon steels prcscnts the same firebrick disintegration problem to heat-treating fiiriiace enginccrs that is found in the blnst furnace. Blast furnace operators licked tlieir problem niany years ago by using a dense siirfnce brick which is given a reducing firing period.
On a recent installation of hood typo furnaces for annealing high cnrbon steels, extensive tests were run to prove that what wns occurring in tlie blast furnace could occur in csactly the sanie iiianner in a hcattreating furnacc. A non-disintegrriting type of firebrick mas iiscd in thc hood type furnacc l)ascs, niid among its advantages over light-weight brick were its rcsistance to abrasion and its hcat storage capacity.
Recent work has sliown that the rcducing firing period niust continuo to a point beyond which all iron oxides in the brick arc cliangcd to the magnetic type. This cliernical cliangc is rcrersible, nnd i t is necessary to continue the reducing firc until all iron is absorbed into a silicnte glass.
