Merlijn, de zoon van Corwin van Amber, speelt het klaar om uit de kristallen grot te vluchten. Luke, die hem daar opgesloten had, sluit vrede met hem. Dit resulteert in een magie-gevecht in het Bastion van de Vier Werelden, een plek waar zich een onuitputtelijke bron van magie bevindt. Met vaart geschreven dubbelroman vol intriges, subplotten en verrassingen. De Amber-serie is dan ook het meest geliefde werk van deze auteur. Het verhaal begint waar de vorige boeken mee zijn opgehouden en het eind blijft dan ook open, evenals de vele onafgemaakte subplotten. Lezing van zijn vorige boeken is noodzakelijk om het verhaal te kunnen volgen.
