✦ Synopsis
These issucs contain more contributions to the continuing series of limnological research results obtained through the cooperation of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas do Amazonia (INPA) in Manaus and the Max-Planck-Institut fur Limnologie in Plon. Most of the papers deal with taxonomic and ecoIogical subjects. Although most of the animals investigated are aquatic, some forest species are also included. The fact that the range of subjects encompasses plankton, fishes, and even Cetacea attests to the scope of the Amazon Basin research program conducted a t JIanaus. Xany specialists have been consulted to complete this work. Such intensive research is ncedcd in many tropical regions before the biota is decimated. Fortunately, Ammonia is being continued after the retirement, of Prof. H. SIOLI, who in his book, The Amazon (see review Int. Revue ges. Hydrobiol. 71 : 723 [1986]), reviewed his life-long research arid his contribution to promoting the interdisciplinary study of the world's largest aquatic ecosystem. I n Vol. I X (l), the analysis of the fish fauna of Ciirub-UnaReservoir,ParB, (E. J. G. FERREIRA) and of Rotifera from Rio Jaraph (W. KOSTE S: Y. K. HARDY) are continued. For ichthyologists and fish hobbyists the report by R. GEISLER & S. R. ANNIBAL on the breeding of Paracheirodon acelrodi may be of interest. H. KLINGE et al. report on bioelements in bark and woodof native trees, and V. E. THATCHER et al. on parasitic copepods of fishes. A paper by u. SAINT-PAUL concerns the seasonal changes in liver composition from t,he fish c07OSSO)nn macropmum.
