โœฆ Synopsis


A simplified method of multiple discriminant analysis, adapted for operation on a small computer, is presented. The basic method, due to Kendall, works with each variable separately, and considers only within-group maxima and minima. As such, it is utterly distribution-free, and in addition avoids the many multiplications required by more common methods, particularly that due to Fisher. A modification of the method to reduce its sensitivity to sampling fluctuations of maxima and minima, or to accidentally grossly different values (blunders), is included in the program, as well as a method for avoiding the bias in estimating error probabilities that is inherent in any classification method based on samples.
