✦ Synopsis

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare malignancy; only 39 cases have been reported in the head and neck region. A 19year-old woman is presented here who had ASPS of the tongue.

Surgical resection was followed by irradiation therapy. She is tumor-free 2 years after treatment. HEAD & NECK SURGERY 9~172-178 1987

Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the head and neck is a rare malignancy, with only 39 cases being reported in the world literature. These neoplasms often have an extremely rich vascular supply and may mimic a cavernous hemangioma or other arteriovenous malformation. Such a situation is exemplified by the following case report.

CASE REPORT

A 19-year-old woman was first seen at the University of California, Davis (UCD) Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery on December 4, 1984 complaining of a lump on the left side of the tongue and floor of the mouth of 3 years' duration. Alveolar softpart sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft-tissue tumor. Few cases have been reported in the aspiration cytology literature. We discuss the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic features of ASPS in four patients. The smears were characterized by single cells and clusters of cells associated wi

The histogenesis of alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) has been investigated since its description. Twenty ASPS cases were analyzed for immunohistochemical content, with emphasis directed toward the paraganglial, Schwann cell, and muscle theories of histogenesis. In addition, the cases were examined
