## Abstract Bisphosphonates are analogues of pyrophosphate, a key physicochemical inhibitor of mineralisation. We examined the direct actions of bisphosphonates on the function of cultured osteoblasts derived from rat calvariae. Treatment with zoledronate, the most potent bisphosphonate studied, re

Abstract
We have previously observed in vivo that chronic AlCl~3~ exposure in young adult New Zealand white rabbits induces a reversible motor neuron degeneration. In addition to the development of neurofilamentous aggregates within degenerating neurons, we have also observed a reduction of microglial number and activation. To determine if aluminum could directly effect microglial function in vivo, we used an immortalized murine microglial cell line (BV‐2) to study the effect of organic (aluminum lactate) and inorganic (AlCl~3~) compounds on microglial function. We have observed a dose‐dependent inhibition of phagocytosis, proliferation, migration, and release of TNF‐α and nitric oxide in the absence of inducing microglial death. Both organic and inorganic aluminum decreased the extent of LPS‐activated microglia‐mediated death of a motor neuron hybridoma cell line (NSC 34). These findings demonstrate that aluminum compounds can directly affect microglial in vitro. J. Trace Elem. Exp. Med. 15:141–152, 2002. © 2002 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

In the present study we have analyzed the expression of galectin-3, a beta-galactoside-specific soluble animal lectin, by microglial cells in vitro. In enriched microglial cell cultures derived from neonatal mouse brain after 2 to 3 weeks in vitro, almost all microglial cells expressed galectin-3 in
## Abstract Hyperplasia of microglia is one characteristic of reactive gliosis, which is observed in various pathologic conditions in the central nervous system (CNS). To investigate the regulation mechanisms of microglial proliferation, the effect of granulocyte macrophage colony‐stimulating facto
Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME) and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGEE) have recently been shown to be potent reproductive toxicants in laboratory animals. The toxicity of these compounds is believed to be due to their metabolites, methoxyacetic acid (MAA) and ethoxyacetic acid (EAA). Sin
The effects of aluminum on the pulmonary function of aluminum workers were investigated in this study. Serum aluminum levels and spirometry were measured in 55 male workers and 30 male controls. The mean serum aluminum level of workers (72.7 Ϯ 9.9 ng/ml) was significantly high compared to that of co
