Conclusion
A mobile Jet-REMPI device has been constructed for use under practical conditions. In addition to laboratory tests, it has been tested at an experimental incineration reactor. Ionization is accomplished nearly without fragmentation, and very low cross sensitivities are achieved. Sensitivities, on the other hand, are very high, e.g., 1 ppt level for benzene. A detection limit of about 10 ppt has been found for 2,7 Cl 2 DD.
On-line measurements of relevant precursors to dioxin formation should be possible in a MWI without preconcentration procedures, as may be concluded by comparison with realistic MWI data. The same holds for chlorobenzenes used as TEQ indicators.
Direct TEQ measurements in the stack remain inaccessible. Further sensitivity improvements are needed and possible. In addition, research is needed to establish efficient REMPI transitions for relevant target compounds, to work out advanced light sources for two-color REMPI, to develop preconcentration techniques, and to improve the chemical kinetic knowledge in order to understand TEQ correlations, to select relevant precursors, and, most important of all, to set prevention mechanisms efficiently in operation.
