Where or when the use of the term paper began would make an interesting study, perhaps even a good topic for a term paper in a history of education course. While the history of the term paper is not the topic of this chapter, it is safe to say that the term paper has been around a long time and that contention about its usefulness and arguments for and against its effectiveness as a teaching device have been around almost as long. In an article by Suzzallo in A Cyclopedia ofEduation, published between 1911 and 1914, he points out that the library method ". . . represents an extreme reaction from the slavish use of
