The levels of alpha1-antitrypsin and alpha2-macroglobulin in the plasma of 129 newborns were determined. The infants were divided into 3 groups according to their perinatal history. In healthy newborns with an uneventful perinatal history the normal values for alpha1-antitrypsin were 1.97 +/- 0.44 g

β¦ Synopsis
Pi phenotype determinations were performed on umbilical cord serum specimens of 347 infants born in Mogadishu (Somalia) hospitals. Phenotyping was performed by isoelectric focusing on polyacrylamide gel slabs. Sera containing a~AT in types other than MM were also studied by crossed antigen-antibody immunoelectrophoresis on agar.
The most frequently occuring Pi allele proved to be PiM. With respect to the other African populations studied so far, there was a high prevalence of the PiS and PiZ alleles. In particular, three individuals were found with the ZZ phenotype, which had not yet been observed in Africa.

Genetically determined phenotypes of the highly polymorphic human alpha, antitrypsin were examined by hybrid isoelectric focusing in a narrow immobilized pH gradient. The chosen pH range from 4.45 to 4.75 was useful for identification and classification of the common PI M subtypes and a number of PI
