✦ Synopsis

In natural speech the acoustic form of each consonantis affected by its context, especially by the vowel which follows it. A computer program for synthesizing speech by rule from phonetic data has been modified so that the rules for generating stop consonants depend upon context. Listening tests have shown that this expedient can increase the intelligibility of stop consonants in isolated CV syllables from 68 ~o to 92%.
