โฆ Synopsis
Anionic fluorochemical surfactants which contain an oil-solubilising group, have been shown to be effective as anti-flotation aids. The fluorochemical surfactant can be added t o the paint a t the milling stage but its effectiveness is greater when it is used as a pigment pretreatment.
5.6. Penetrating oil
As mentioned above, fluorochemical surfactants will reduce the surface tension of organic liquids. An example of the utilisation of this property is i n penetrating oils.
Tests have shown that the spread of white spirit con-taining 0.1 O / o of an oil-solubilised non;ionic fluorochemical surfactant, between ground glass plates, is over three times as rapid as white spirit alone. Similar results were obtained when fluorochemical surfactant was added to samples of commercially-available penetrating oils.
5.7. Emulsions
One of the best illustrations of hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon surfactants acting synergistically is as emulsifiers. In some cases half of the hydrocarbon emulsifier can be replaced by a few p p m of a fluorochemical surfactant with no loss of emulsion stability. Thus fluorocarbon surfactants offer the possibility of obtaining emulsions with greater stability and with less total surfactant, often a t no greater cost.
