Many first-generation interspecific hybrids between the five species of the Drosophila virilis subgroup are fertile. Fertile hybrids can be utilized in the analysis of sterile hybrids, by creating new combinations of genetic elements to identify cross-incompatible chromosomes or chromosome segments.
