In Langevin and Zanotti (1995), we introduced a new class of codes called balanced weight distribution (BWD)-codes, with the remarkable property that their weight distribution is balanced, i.e., there are the same number of codewords for each non-zero weight. The aim of this paper is to study the we

β¦ Synopsis
The aim of this paper is the classi"cation of two-weight irreducible cyclic codes. Using Fourier transforms and Gauss sums, we obtain necessary and su$cient numerical conditions for an irreducible cyclic code to have at most two weights. This gives a uni"ed explanation for all two-weight irreducible cyclic codes and allows a conjecturally complete classi"cation. Aside from the two known in"nite families of two-weight irreducible cyclic codes, a computer search reveals 11 sporadic examples. We conjecture that these are already all two-weight irreducible cyclic codes and give a partial proof of our conjecture conditionally on GRH.

We consider cyclic codes of length n over β«ήβ¬ q , n being prime to q. For such a cyclic code C, we describe a system of algebraic equations, denoted by S C (w), where w is a positive integer. The system is constructed from Newton's identities, which are satisfied by the elementary symmetric function
The weight distribution is an important parameter that determines the performance of a code. The minimum distance and the number of corresponding codes that can be derived from the weight distribution, greatly affect the performance of the code. The decoding error probability and other performance m
