✦ Synopsis
By placing a sequence of cascaded sum-frequency generation/difference-frequency generation (SFG/DFG) nonlinear processes inside an interferometer and periodically removing the sum-frequency wave, one can tailor the transfer function of the device to resemble an ideal step function. In particular, the flat region of the nonlinear transfer function representing the ÔonÕ state can have a very large dynamic range. Such a device would reduce the noise of both ÔonesÕ and ÔzerosÕ in a binary optical communications link. We calculate the nonlinear transfer function of this device and demonstrate via numerical simulations that it can have significant signal-regeneration capabilities.
