dult education is a field in which few rules survive the A harsh realities of experience. There is one that I call: The Rule of Universal Nonattraction. It states: If your program is one that everybody is interested in, no one will come. For example, a course in ethics. Everyone is concerned with right and wrong but hardly anyone wants to study ethics. Where would you mail a brochure for a weekend course on ethics?
To avoid the disappointing consequences of this rule we can often employ a common programming technique: combining ethics with something else. A program that addresses the question of how society and individuals ought to behave in the face of biomedical advances-amniocentesis, organ transplants, dialysis machines-escapes the clutches of the rule of universal nonattraction. Health professionals can be contacted through their professional and institutional associations. The ever elusive general public can be approached through its churches, synagogues, charity and volunteer associations, civic and social clubs.
