✦ Synopsis

The difficulties inherent in characterising reactive free radicals by electron spin resonance can often be avoided by the use of a 'spin trapping' technique.

The method is based on the conversion of transient radicals to long-lived paramagnetic species by their addition to a diamagnetic scavenger, for example a monomeric C-nitroso-compound 192 .
